Honey is a form of sugar so it's best to limit how much of it you have. It's considered more healthy than white sugar because it's less processed, so it retains nutrients including antioxidants and some vitamins. In fact, the darker the honey, the more antioxidants it has because darker honey is typically harvested in fall when the bees have foraged on a variety of flowers versus lighter honey which is usually harvested in late spring/early summer when mostly clover is blooming.
Anyway, very rich in antioxidants, and a superior sweetener to most. Maybe the fact of being so rich of antioxidants make honey doesn't expire.
The WHO recommends less than 6 tsp for women/9 tsp for men of added sugars daily.
It is said that local honey helps with pollen allergies but not sure if it's really supported by science.
Medically speaking, honey can also be used as cough suppressant. You can sweeten your hot tea with honey. Based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, honey has sweet and neutral properties, and is associated with the Lung, Large Intestine, Spleen and Stomach meridians. Its main functions are to tonify the spleen and stomach, to restore qi, and to prevent dryness. That's why it's extremely effective for dry coughing. However it should be avoided in cases of too much internal dampness.
