I was asked by a patient last week if is it better to drink regular soda with the insane amounts of sugar or better to drink diet with sketchy artificial sweeteners?
IT DEPENDS. It depends how often you drink soda.
It's not the same to drink 5 times a week that 5 times a month.
Eating too much added sugar are correlated to heart conditions, such as heart attack and high blood pressure metabolic issues, including diabetes and obesity brain conditions, such as dementia and stroke liver problems, which include nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
On the other hand, there's no evidence of aspartame for example being bad for humans when consumed within limits. You'd have to drink 6+ liters of diet soda daily for it to be bad for you in the long run. However, there are studies that prove Aspartame unsafe long-term effects on brain cells that is connected to the development of dementia; premature aging (= screws with your skin overtime) or recently diet soda consumption correlates with an increased risk of a wide range of medical conditions, notably.
At this moment time, there are more studies claiming the bad effects of high consumption of sugars in your diet than sweeteners. However there are not studies comparing if sugars are better than the alternative? Therefore it's your choice
RECOMMENDATION: If you're going to occasionally drink soda, I suggest you look into companies like organic soda brands. Spoil your taste. Get used to drinking higher quality.
Then the generic soda you get in restaurants will taste awful.
Organic soda also just has a lot less sugar, less chemicals, less preservatives. Less sugar also means less calories! They have sugar free ones as well.
Remember that if you practice moderation, neither will harm you but prioritize high quality food always.
